Hunt returned as Tennis President

At the Annual General Meeting held on Friday night, Warren Hunt was chosen again to lead the Tennis Club for another 12 months when he was re-elected as the Clubs President.

The meeting followed the Clubs last of its Friday nights programmed activities for the year which saw Dan Jamieson win the juniors section and some top matches both in singles and doubles played in the other section. Warren despite having spent a good part of the year with his family at Westmead hospital, performed his duties again so well and praised and thanked the committee and volunteers for keeping the club going to enjoy another successful year of tennis activities.

Juniors

After two weeks of cancelling the Thursday orange ball three quarter court competition due to the hot weather we finally held the weekly tourney with 6 players braving and enjoying the drizzle conditions and narrowly completed the hour before the rain hit. Well done to Jack Booth winner and Tilly Weeks runner up for this one with Max Booth the big improver. Play will continue this Thursday with the start time 6.30 this week to allow the extra bit of shade for the courts and play to finish at 7.30pm. All members are welcome to play with the weekly tourney designed to cater for those players who are not quite ready for normal court /green balls. If players can at least serve in, one out of three attempts from the three quarter line they should give it a go. It is noticeable the improvement in the players.

There has been a great response to the recent email issued to those registered on the tennis mailing list, for Stuart Callaghan’s  January coaching with all spots for the private coaching now full.

Tony Callaghan has the booking/timetable schedule for the 8th to 12th January.

Meanwhile our 4 coaches are being kept busy Lani Houston , Jess Weeks , Immy and Sara Molloy and maybe others with all details of contact numbers and prices on the web.

The Hay Bowling and Golf Club has joined Auscott and Wooloondool Farms as the Tennis Clubs major sponsors. The generous deal will greatly financially assist the Tennis Club to meet its debts and running costs. The Council loan to reseal its main 4 courts should be finalised in the next two years and by then the clubs back three courts will likely need work done.

It was a similar scoreline when Karinda Deatons IGA team beat the Pynors Accountants team in A grade.  The Hay Jewellers team of Kim and Zoe Biggs were in devastating form in not losing a game in their match against the Hay Newsagency. The three grade finals as well as some playoff matches are scheduled this week.

Some great matches and atmosphere continue on Friday nights. Good to see Peter Head back on the courts with him and Anthony Slattery combining very well. Well done to Beth Schiller and Sarah Lindsay in their top win. Zander Haidy played well to win two singles.

In fact the pair won all their other  matches with the same  scoreline and upon checking the winners board showed previous success in winning this  title together way back in 1989.

The Meggs Grain Handling of Peter Davies and Paula Comb  team had a great season to take out the B grade section in actually playing two matches on the night while the Lani Houston Consulting team of Jimmy and Rowan Houston won the C grade final 6/3 6/4 against the Hay Newsagency team of Alex Haidy and Joe Wilson.

This now concludes Wednesday tennis for the year with Friday nights activities still welcoming entries.

The 18s finals were of the highest standard with Immy Molloy beating Hannah Stewart in a brilliant match and Kenny Hargreaves beating Zanda Haidy also in a strong tennis match. Temora  who has a wonderful and improved tennis facility held a junior tennis tournament on Sunday with a number of Hay players involved. Successful Tennis Weekend

The Annual Wooloondool/Auscott Hay Open and Junior Tennis tournament attracted exactly 100 players on the weekend and expertly programmed by Hays international experienced tournament director Steve Longworth to have the last match and presentation completed by 4pm on the Sunday.

The weekend of tennis activities commenced on Thursday when the newly appointed Tennis NSW South West Participation Officer Brendon Lee organised with Lani Houston to conduct an all day Junior tennis clinic which amazingly received 70 participants. Brendon Lee brought with him 5 of his pupils from his previous coaching school business in Casino in northern NSW and Southern Queensland and together with 5 Hay coaches utilised all the synthetic courts to conduct a very satisfied and popular tennis day. Thank you to the three Hay Schools giving this last minute publicity.

The Tournament again produced  brilliant tennis with some players having high Australian Rankings. David Poole currently in Melbourne having spent time in the USA  tennis competitions won the mens Final 6/1 7/6 against former Riverina champion Danny Dossetor who has returned to his hometown of Griffith  now conducting a tennis coaching business.

The Womens final was won by the brilliant Jordan Gregson from Sydney who was very strong in all her matches beating a former Hay Open champion Stacey Curran (nee Elliott) of Wagga.

Hay had some success in the 40 events conducted. Jess Weeks partnered a Queenslander to go down in the A mixed final. The C Mens doubles finalists were Danny and Greg Stewart losing 8/3 after the first 4 games were deuces. Immy Molloy came second to Hannah Potts of Parkes in the 16s girls. Brad Callaghan took out the 14s singles 6/5 in the final against Lachlan Kelly of Mildura with Pacey Marks missing a semi spot on averages. Jensen Hargreaves continues his brilliant form by winning the 12s singles in a big field. Boys doubles success went to Jensen and Kenny Hargreaves in the 14s doubles and to Danny Stewart and Brad Callaghan in the 12s.  Chloe Mulcahy formerly of Carrathool was runner up in the 10s girls.  Indyanna Wilson played very well in her first tourney competing in the 10s group. Anthony Slattery partnered Josh Kilo of Albury in the over 90s to be runner up. Peter and Pacey Marks won the parent/child B section final against Andrew and Tom Davies 8/4

Many thanks goes to all the wonderful volunteers  and this includes newcomers  Tracey and Paul Newnham who spent many hours of their time to ensure the tournament was a success both on and off the courts.  Hopefully the success will inject some much needed funds into the club.
