The Hay Tennis Club year kicks off Monday 9th February with the commencement of the women’s doubles competition followed by the men Wednesday 11th February. Entries close this Thursday via the website or directly to Tournament Director, Tony Callaghan on 0419571292. The club would like to welcome and invite any new players that have moved to town to come down and join in the fun. 2015 is shaping up as a huge year ahead, with record memberships and a weekly newsletter subscription topping 500 via email. President Warren Hunt expects good participation with all our weekly night competitions. Hay will also host, for the first time, two Medibank Junior Series tournaments in April and in August. This will be a huge boost for all our players who compete in The Series as they will get some home tournaments.

During the off-season Coach Callaghan conducted two summer camps, which he was using to bring players up to the level needed to compete in The Series. One noted highlight, amongst many, of the two summer camps was the continued rivalry of two great young left-handers, Ralph Robson and Zander Haidy, playing consecutive finals against each other in front of a huge crowd, with Robson winning both. These camps have provided the perfect lead in to when The Series starts on February 22nd in West Wyalong. Players wishing to attend this tournament contact Stuart Callaghan.

The first week of this Year’s Australian Open provided a highlight for some lucky members of the Hay Tennis Club. Through Stuart Callaghan’s strong links with Japanese Tennis, he organised Ben Finch to be an on-court hitting partner for Moi Nishikori, younger brother of top 10 player Kei Nishikori, as he worked his way through the qualifiers only just missing out on the main draw. A great experience for Ben along with Stuart Callaghan and Lani Houston who all helped coordinate the young Japanese players schedule. There are some great photos on the website of Lani, Ben and Stuart eating out with the Japanese Davis Cup team after a big day at The Open.

Tony Callaghan has just returned from an elite tennis coordinators conference held at the Brockelhurst Tennis Club, NSW. Brockelhurst, famous for its, cutting-edge tennis programmes such as developing the Fast Four which is being trialled around the world, invites the leading coordinators from each state to conduct and workshop ideas to rejuvenated tennis, Tony was this year’s representative from NSW. Well done Tony.

Big Number at First Tennis Camp

There were well over 50 juniors participating in the first of two school holiday tennis camps. The rain on the second day of the three day activities did not dampen the enthusiasm of the players.

The Crightons Rural and Foodworks awards went to Jack Booth and Dimity Mc Lean for their overall performances during the camp.

THe second camp will be conducted on the 27th, 28th and 29th January with Stuart away in Melbourne attending a four day coaching conferance with speakers and demonstrations being conducted by some of the best qualified persons from around the world and then Stuart will attend the first week of the Australian Open.

The present good weather is making court hire popular and persons requiring keys at present should contact Tony Callaghan.

Entries are now being taken online for the next Monday night womens comp in four grades and the Wednesday night mens comp in three grades with  players entering with a partner or requesting a partner. Players may enter a team of more than two players for rotation each week if they wish. The competitions will commence after school resumes.

With the year coming to an end the Hay Tennis Club has capped off a great 2014. The Club had great numbers in both Senior and Junior competitions making it a great year for tennis. Cullenward Finds an Extra Gear

This weeks Thursday afternoon Murrumbidgee Tennis Academy for boys was played in perfect conditions despite the weather. All eight players battled it out for 2 hours in 38 degrees in a gruelling round robin. The eventual winner being Darcy Cullenward who was too strong in the end for a group which boasts such talent as Clark, Woods and Maynard amongst others. Blessed with great genetics Darcy has the silky smooth ground strokes of father Hamish combined with the fire and Brimstone, no-compromise steely mental resolve of mother Fleur. President Warren Hunt was that impressed with his fighting spirit, quotes "This kid has gravel in his guts and spit in his eye - I'd have him playing for my life if I had to choose!" This is a huge compliment from Hunt, as he was one of Hay's all time greatest and toughest competitors on the Hay sporting scene. Darcy is now absolute favourite to take out this year's "Warren Hunt Brakedrums" award for mental toughness.

The Spring Equinox Classic has a new leader in Allen Dwyer, just ahead of Geoff Champman and Warren Hunt.

The Club Championships mixed doubles final was decided on Friday night in front of a good crowd with at least 72% of them Crightons. Newnham and Davies narrowly defeated the much favoured and well supported team of Stu Callaghan and Delilah Crighton 6/3 6/2 in a great game. The match was a huge feature as Delilah Crighton became the youngest player to reach an open club championship final at 11 years of age, surpassing the long held record of Wes Grant who was 12 when he featured up with Pam Norman in the 1977 mixed final.

In other news, next month will mark the 20 year anniversary of a very pivotal sporting moment, whereby Stu Callaghan was competing in the under 18s nationals on the Gold Coast. This event saw him come up against little known whiney South Australian kid, Lleyton Hewitt. Callaghan completing destroyed Hewitt 6/2 6/1 6/1. Hewitt has never forgotten the moment, as he has often written about, quote "I was left crying and unconsolable for weeks" which is when he realised from that moment onwards he had to become more mentally tough to make it. "That match against Callaghan has changed me forever", Hewitt said. Hewitt despite his complete lack of natural ability went on to become one of the top fifty players in the world and puts it down to his mental strength and Stu Callaghan who gave him his greatest tennis lesson of his career.Tony Callaghan is very excited about the news of the possible return to tennis by child prodigy and original member of the Callaghan Youth Squad - Chris McIntyre. Chris is described by Tony as a player with great stroke making ability with an open mind and a pleasure to coach. His return to tennis will further strengthen the mens division within the club.Kenny Hargreaves and Richie Weymouth win the Foodworks and Crighton's Engineering Weekly Awards for the greatest under 10s boys Club Championships single final seen in decades. Richie overcame Kenny in the final points to win 6/4. The under 10s girls final was played between Skye Lilburne and Sophie Curtis, with Skye winning 4/1. Zac Molloy will meet Bently Murphy in the Under 18s final this week, after Zac defeated Digby Lilburne 6/2 and Bently defeated Dylan Lund 6/0. Sara Molloy won the 18s girls final defeating Immogen Molloy 6/3. Minor mixed doubles compeition winners were Mikaela and Daryl Hurts as well as Sara Molloy and Ritchie Weymouth.

The semi-finals of the Club Championships mixed doubles were played on Friday night, with both games living up to expectations. In the first, the super star pairing of Kate and Bently Murphy, the 92Computing No1 Seeds, were narrowly defeated by Samantha Newnham and Andrew Davies, 6/4 7/6(8/6). The other match between No.2 Seeds Warren “the Axe” Hunt and Tanya Stephens and No.3 Seeds Coach Stu Callaghan and the hard hitting Delilah Crighton, broke all previous records with the game being decided after 4 hours with Callaghan/Crighton winning 29/27 in the third. The final will be played with Samantha Newnham and Andrew Davies versing Stu Callaghan and Delilah Crighton this Friday night.

Greg Stewart remains on top in the Spring Equinox Classic, just ahead of Allen Dwyer and Peter Marks, although expect a big push up the ladder from grass court specialist Chris Hobart in the coming weeks.

Hay Tennis Club received great news during the week, where-by “The Lonely Planet” guide to Great Australian Sporting Clubs listed Hay Tennis Club as a must visit destination for any world traveller! The Club is very proud as it was the only club of any sporting nature mentioned from Country NSW. A big congratulations must go to Wendy Heery who has been charming the Lonely Plant team for months – Well done Wendy!

Congratulations from the Club must also go to Damo Slattery who has converted all the Club’s archives, great sporting moments and dummy-spits to Microfiche along will also developing a Microfiche phone app for Apple and Andriod users. This week’s Foodworks award goes to Chris Hobart. The Crighton’s Award goes to Steve Longworth.

Hay Open Tennis Tournament Success

The Hay Open Tennis tournament was a raving success over the weekend. Many Hay locals both juniors and adults entered in a variety of events, alongside a huge number of quality players from other towns and states. Ben Finch, Hannah Stewart and Richie Weymouth were stand out Hay competitors, playing doubles and singles throughout the tourney with great success. Cheryl Rawle, Griffith Tennis Coach, was very impressed, stating the Hay Open as “a brilliant community effort, with first class grounds, courts and food. The variety of events, promoted the old fashioned concept that tennis is fun and is for all ages and standards”. Brenda Foster, Wagga Wagga Tennis Coach, described the Hay Open as “a great family tournament”. The HTC would like to thank all the players and volunteers who contributed to making this Hay Open, an outstanding success. See and/or join the Hay Tennis Club Facebook group for more photos of the Open.

Stuart Callaghan’s holiday tennis camp was packed with juniors of all ages in the first week of the holidays. Groups of all standards took to the courts for coaching and fun, with some new comers to the game. On Day 3, stand out participants were awarded for sportsmanship, work ethic and “figuring it out”. 120 Players for Open Tournament

Hay Tennis Club will be swarming with players from across the country this coming weekend, as Hay hosts its annual Tournament. Registrations in all divisions look like the strongest in over a decade. Many locals will also use their home ground advantage, with high expectations to push deep into the rounds of competition.

The total player entries to date are over 120 which is looking towards a very good entry this year. It includes 40 Hay players comprising a fantastic local junior entry of 25.In the very high standard open mens singles a total of 20 players which includes Zac Molloy have entered and with this number as well as the 9 open womens singles means a good size entry compared to other similar standard computer point scoring Tennis Australia Tourneys.Hay players entries have spread themselves over A,B and C grade events as well as the various junior events and the popular parent/child events. The only shortfall at the moment is the combined 90years event.Cheryl Rawle from Griffith and Cameron Meagher from Albury is bringing over a contingent of juniors. Other players are coming from all over Victoria as well as Sydney,ACT and the Riverina. Former champion Brenda Foster of Wagga is playing. The full details of entries received can be found by going to the clubs website and clicking on to the yellow box at the bottom of the page and then click on to "entry confirmation lists'

Warren Hunt and Andrew Davies have done a fantastic job this past week in getting the clay courts, surrounds, equipment and sheds repaired and up to standard.Breakfast, lunch and dinner will be available over the weekend with anyone interested in doing a few hours in the kitchen to contact Wendy Heerey.Thank you to all those who are assisting in some way to ensure the tourney will be a success.Thank you to the major sponsors Wooloondool Farms and Auscott not to forget The Services Club who has been a strong supporter of tennis over the years.

Warren Hunt and Ben Finch gave it their all, with spectators commenting on the quality of tennis played. The final result was 6/1 7/6 to the Carrathool Cartel. With another big holiday tennis program in place and the continuous success of Sunday morning tennis, Coach Callaghan would like to thank his junior coaching team. Zac Molloy and Bently Murphy have helped build the junior program from the start, as well as newly appointed debutants coach (4 year old and up) Ritchie Weymouth. Ritchie is an original member of the Callaghan Youth and although only 10 himself eased into the role two weeks ago, churning out hot Latino moves combined with trademark Cold War rhetoric, straight from the Callaghan handbook of influencing the young. Callaghan is very pleased with the job Ritchie is doing and thinks the new responsibility around the club will help him in his own game for the 2015 Series.

No Tuesday, Friday or Sunday tennis for two weeks. This Foodworks and Crighton Engineering weekly awards go to Emily Headon and Brad Callaghan.

Pless and Slattery Put on a Show

Juniors flocked to the courts on Friday night, producing healthy competition, and so, an enjoyable night of tennis. The Friday night group winners were Chloe Weeks, Jordan Woods and Cody Poole. The women’s club championships doubles semi finals are scheduled this week with some matches played last week to determine semi positions, following three weeks of bad weather cancellations. The men’s doubles saw the No1 seeds, Scott Dixon and Pistol Pete Lawrence breeze through their semi 6-2 6-1 over Andrew Davies and Allen Dwyer. They will go on to meet the No2 seeds Warren Hunt and Ben Finch in the final. These two had a narrow win over the long-time pairing of Pete Marks and Greg Stewart who lived up to their reputation as being best players in a storm with the perfect conditions on Tuesday night almost getting them home.

In the match of the round, Paul Pless and Damon Slattery won an epic, 12-10 in the third, against Bede Schiller and Tom Porter. It had the whole club captivated as the usually calm and calculating pairing of Porter and Schiller, were thrown from their game as Paul Pless manoeuvered around the court with moves more akin to the 1920s burlesque scene. Slattery, who is well aware of the Pless distractions, was able to keep a cool head and close out the game through it all.

This week’s Crighton Engineering and Foodworks weekly awards go to Harriet Lugsdin for excellent shot-making volleys and Hannah Stewart for pure grunt and determination on court.

Group B saw Gemma Tassel go through the evening undefeated, ahead of Emily Headon second. Group C saw Cody Poole narrowly nudge out Brad Callaghan and Nicholas Mirrabelli.

Dylan Clarke starred in the 9am group and Olivia Joyce also doing the same in teh 10am group. The 11am session honours were shared between Dylan Lund, Richie Weymouth and Maggie Biggs. There will be no junior tennis this coming Sunday due to the show.

The Hay Open Junior Tournament (26-28th Sept) is only three weekends away and coach Stuart Callaghan is reminding all players, especially juniors, to get their entries in to gain valuable tournament experience. We are lucky enough to have the greatest tournament director on the planet, in Steve Longworth, who is urging all local players to take advantage of the playing in such an event.

Foodworks and Crighton's Engineeering Weekly Awards go to Gemma Tassel and Corey Poole.

The Medibank Series came to a conclusion last Sunday where eight finalists from each age division, from Southern NSW, played off. Hannah Stewart, Ritchie Weymouth, Kenny and Jensen Hargreaves and Imogen Molloy (who was on crutches and unable to play in the final) were the five Hay players selected for the Series play off. HTC would like to congratulate them on their outstanding achievement in the 2014 Series. Stuart Callaghan expects this is just the start of things to come, as he predicts Hay will completely dominate the 2015 Series. Preseason for this will commence in November.

The much anticipated arrival of Coach Callaghan's ball machine was like a call to arms for the kids, turning up in droves for Friday arvo tennis.Division One played singles, with Jordan Woods the winner and Lote Clarke and Richie Weymouth equal second. Division  Two and Three combined to see nine players play doubles with Holly Headon winning by one point from sister Emily, with Zanda Haidy coming in third position. HTC: Dixon Wins Classic

Wednesday night saw Scott Dixon win the Men’s Hay Tennis Club Singles Championships in a great 3 set match against Andrew Davies 6/3 2/6 6/0. The game thrilled the small crowd with quality tennis until Dixon proved too strong, running away with the third. The win is a great reward for Scott who makes a huge effort traveling in from Wyvern each week. Commitment like this goes a long way to making the club what it is today.

The Club Championship doubles will start this week with big entries in both Mens and Womens events. While we previewed the Women’s combinations last week, this week we focus on the Men’s teams. Four of the big combinations include newly crowned Singles Champion Scott Dixon who will team up with big serving Pistol Pete Lawrence; known around the club as the “Carrathool Cartel” they are a favourite for going all the way. Warren Hunt, who is still the No 1 doubles player on the latest 92 Computing rankings site, will team up with Ben Finch, who won’t take any prisoners after a shock early round exit in the Singles to a croydon qualifier. No 2 ranked Hay Doubles player Pete Marks has poached grass court specialist Greg Stewart which will make an awkward combination for anyone to play against. While Marks will control the net, Stewart will own the niggle around the court. The last of the Big 4 is the team of Dylan Lund and Stuart Callaghan. Stuart, who has just returned from Vietnam where he was invited by the Hanoisenberg Institute to coordinate and ignite the resurgence into Vietnamese tennis, will play with long-time partner Dylan Lund. In Callaghan’s absence, Dylan has been preparing himself mentally with a wholesome diet of Special K, roasted pinenuts and the teachings of the Dalai Lama.

This week the Foodworks and Crighton’s Engineering Weekly Award goes to Scott Dixon.

Hay Will Host the Series in 2015

Sunday saw Hay Tennis Club travel to wagga for the last leg of the 2014 Medibank series and once again completely dominated the tournament with numbers as it has done all through the year. Maggie Biggs was the player of the day for Hay reaching her first semi final only to be narrowly beaten by the eventual winner in the girls U/13s. Other players to make finals were Kenny Hargreaves, Richie Weymouth and Herbie Maynard all making it to the quarters in the U/11 boys. Lotti Clarke also performed well in the boys U/13s. Tennis NSW officials on the day made the decision to reward Hay with not one but two tournaments for the 2015 series.
Hay tennis club junior participation is rampant and is higher per capita than any other club in NSW. Tennis NSW are keen to visit Hay to learn more about how to increase junior numbers in other areas across the state. Coach Stu Callaghan said it is no secret. He is simply following the proven East German blue print of sports science, combining that with the modern power game introduced by Borg! - a sure pathway to success.
The men's and women's club championship singles commence this week.

Tennis Club Memberships are due this Thursday 31st July.

Congratulations to all the Juniors for their outstanding performances and sportsmanship last Friday night
