The Hay Services Club Hay Open tournament held last weekend was a magnificent success. The weather was very kind providing cool but fine and sunny conditions for the entire 3 days of the tournament. The much improved entry of 96 players, compared to last year’s entry, enabled most events to run catering for all ages and all grades. A huge contingent of players came from Griffith with over 50 players while the Hay entry was the best for several years with over 20 from Hay participating. The whole atmosphere of the event was fantastic and a number of visiting players commented on the relaxed and professional way the whole event is presented to them and have promised to return.

In the Open Singles, which now attract Tennis Australia ranking points the Mens Singles champion was 17 year old Nick Fenaughty from Finley. Nick seeded 3 surprised the No2 seed Andrew Zelea from Melbourne in the semi final then continued his excellent form to defeat the No4 seed also from Melbourne Justin Levin in the Final. Another outstanding result in this event was the performance of Joel Gordon from Griffith who managed to beat the No1 seed Ethan Tulliani from Sydney in the Quarter finals 13-11 in the final set tiebreaker. In the Womens singles Brenda Foster returned to defend her title and met last years runner up again in the final Maddison Gregor from Griffith. Brenda once again showed the experience of her many years playing Tennis winning also the Womens Doubles and two different Mixed doubles  . This is also reflected in her strength in the ITF International Tennis Seniors events. Brenda will be travelling to San Diego next February to represent Australia in the 45 and over age groups.

The junior events were well supported especially with the large contingent of Griffith players. A special thank you is extended to the Griffith Coach Cheryl Rawle who organised the majority of the attending juniors, organising their bus transport, warm ups before the start of play and generally helping these juniors with their skills on the Tennis Court. She also played in a number of events and  won some of the prizes. Once again it highlights how coaches that are prepared to organise trips away and participate in Open tournaments foster the development of our future Tennis players.

Hay players featured quite well in the winners list with Steve Sharp showing that Hay players can enter the tournament and have a thoroughly good time. Steve won the C Grade doubles with a Pster Tyson from Griffith and also partnered Lani Houston to take out the C Grade mixed. Also of particular note was Rupert Lilburnes performance in the under 10 Boys Singles where he made the final and defeated Ryan Salvestro from Griffith. The under 14 Boys singles had one of the largest fields of any event with 20 Boys playing in the round robin event. Alan Dwyer and Andrew Davies took out two titles , the B Grade Mens Doubles as well as the over 90s combined doubles event.

At the presentation held at 3.30 Sunday the Hay Club president, Warren Hunt thanked all sponsors and the small teams of volunteers that made the event possible – It was a great team effort by those of the Hay tennis committee and others that assisted. Before the presentation of the prizes in a surprise move it was announced that special signage had been organised to rename Court 1 – Tony Callaghan court, Court 3- Steve Longworth court and Court 4- Wendy Heerey court. This was a real surprise for both Steve and Wendy to be awarded this honour. Unfortunately Tony was away for the weekend.

Steve Longworth when closing indicated that the tournament would be held next year again but will be two weeks later and held the weekend immediately after the Long weekend in October. The Hay tournament will conclude a Spring Riverina Tennis circuit which is planned to commence in Wagga the previous week , then move to Griffith and conclude with the Hay Open on October 5- 7th 2012. Steve also managed to play in one event during the tournament and was runner up in the A Grade Mens doubles with 16 yr old Tavis Bergamin from Griffith. Steve next weekend will be managing the Riverina Open in Wagga then immediately after will be heading to manage the ITF World Seniors Individual Championships in Antalya , Turkey where over 500 players from around the world have entered. This event features the best players from around the world 60 years and over up to 85 and over.

Good tennis entry for Services Club Open Tournament

After receiving the lowest entry on record at last years annual open tournament the Club has bounced back with 90 players registered as at Sunday for the coming weekends play. Congratulations go to the organisers for the persistance in maintaining this important event for the Hay community with strong support from Griffith with 46 players.Hay has 20 players but Tournament director Steve Longworth would love a few more entries in the (C) grade events with players nominating their time availability over the three days. The open events look to be the strongest on record due to the tournament carrying Australian ranking points for the first time. Of the total 19 players received for the major mens and womens singles all but two have australian rankings. The highest ranked Ethan Tulliani from Sydney is 220  who has just returned from overseas world ranked tournaments and not far behind his ranking is Melbournes Andrew Zelea and former player of this tourney Nick Fenaughty.Three former winners are competing with Waggas Brenda Foster and Griffiths Tavis Bergamin as well Maddison Gregor who is the highest ranked of the six women competitors. Griffiths state school champions Megan Polkinghorne and Chloe Oates are also competing with strong players also from Shepparton; Junior events have huge entries and those players from Hay playing their first tourney are to learn and not be discouraged if they lose. The courts and surrounds are starting to look good thanks to those carrying out the maintenance on the weekend and because of the numbers of players, families and spectators this weekend Marg Myers is hoping to get volunteers even only for an hour of their time over the three days.Full kiosk facilities will operate including breakfast.

Tennis Open Tournament Proceeding

The annual Hay Open and Junior tennis tournament will be held from Friday afternoon 23rd to 25th Sept. the start of the school holidays. The tournament is without a major sponsor with annual sponsorship requests and approaches being made this week. The tournament having been held for many decades and being a big part of the Hay community calendar received a poor entry and held little interest amongst Hay players last year. However new strategies have taken place with the tournament gaining Australian Rankings points which means a higher level and increased numbers in the main events.Riverina and district as well as local players will set their sights on the minor events and leave the open events for the professionals. The program will still maintain the popular parent and child doubles to keep the social atmosphere of the tournament. The committee is anxious to receive assistance over the three days  to spread the workload around  and of course the club is hoping all current players will play at least one event of their standard.

 Club Championships

Andrew Cronin won the mens singles for the fourth time again beating Andrew Davies in three sets this time the score being 6/2 5/7 6/3.Other good mens matches were the brilliant play of Nick Hurle over John Hang, with Andrew Schipp winning in a tie breaker over Steve Sharpe. The mens doubles commences August 10th with the defending champions Steve Longworth and Peter Lawrence unable to play however 9 pairs will fight it out.In the womens semi played Belinda Headon had a great 7/5 6/0 win over the talented Jasmine Gregory with the final scheduled Aug 8th. If you know anyone that would like to be a sub get them to give me a call or give me their name and I will get in touch with them as we all need a sub sometime and it is real handy to have someone you can call up to play.Jodi Anderson and Kelcey had the draw in division 4 tonight so they didn't have to come tonight. Kathrine Maynard and Anna Lilburne will have the bye next week. Anna and Kathrine had a win tonight over Rieta and Zara. It is great to see the girls that have to travel a fair way to play a game be so keen, thanks girls we really appreciate your effort.Teressa Miribeli is also keen to sub for anyone if you need a sub so give her a ring if you can't play so the comp can continue on.

My good mate Andrew Mabon out at 92 Computing will have the draw up on the web for us if you need to chech who you are playing, thanks Andrew.

Also girls a big plus is the COMMUNITY CALENDAR and it is out now so you can put your birthday etc on the calendar if you call into the SPORTFIRST shop in the old Centrespot building or you can see Gaylene Stephens at the TOURIST CENTRE or if all else fails give me a ring and we can organise something for you, the cost is a gold coin only per birthday or whatever so don't forget and don't let anyone else forget your birthday put it on the COMMUNITY CALENDAR.

Men's doubles on wednesday night so hope the weather holds for their night as they have a good roll up to come and play now so if you want a game give me a acall and we will slot you in.

Mens tennis was a little warm tonight but the boys seem to have coped very well, no complaints so all is good. We had 12 boys turn up which gave them 6 teams for doubles.

Tom Porter and Bede Schiller had a win over Shane Pearce and Steve Sharpe.

Hugh Burnham and Adam Davidson played a hard game against Andrew Cronin and Anthony Slattery who came up trumps in their game.

Allen Dwyer and Andrew Davies played against Derek McFarland and Peter Lawrence, it was the longest game of the night, a good battle with the winners being Allen and Andrew winning in the finish.

Boys will be back again next week for another round and see who comes up trumps next week. The Mossies are really bad and they are the only down side for both the ladies and the mens night as they drive everyone mad so please remember to bring something to clobber them with. Foodworks have a new load of gels, sprays and sunscreens with a repellant so don''t forget to get some as you will need it as the mossies are really bad. The bulk of the games are over before we need the lights but the mossies are still around without the lights

Don"t forget the community calendar available at sportfirst and the tourist centre $1.oo per item to put on the calendar

Will see you all again next week

Hay Tennis Open – small but spectacular.

The Annual Hay Tennis Open concluded with the presentation at 3.30 pm last Sunday Afternoon after a weekend where the 60 players participating played a large number of matches. Because the numbers were lower most events were run as round robin events catering well for all the grades available in the tournament.

In the feature events the Open Mens and Womens Singles winners were from Griffith and Wagga. In the Mens event Danny Dossetor from Griffith won over promising junior Tavis Bergamin also from Griffith in two sets.  Danny next week will be off to the USA to play 4 international IFT events.  In the Womens  Singles Brenda Foster from Wagga defeated another upcoming junior Maddison Gregor from Griffith in the round robin event. Brenda commented that this was the first time in 31 years she had held the Hay Tennis Trophy after winning many years ago when she was  Brenda Catton from Swan Hill at the age of 17 years. Brenda currently represents Australia in the ITF Seniors World Championships in the 45 years age group. The trophies in all the other grades and events were well distributed between the players from Griffith who won the majority plus players from Wodonga, Mangoplah, Wagga, Wollongong and local players also featured in the B and C Grade events.

The weather for the weekend was absolutely perfect with light winds and mild temperatures. The tournament was also treated to a first with a fireworks display from Court 6 on the Saturday evening.

The club will be holding the event next year and will be applying to Tennis Australia to have the event as an Australian Ranking tournament which will attract ranking points. This is hoped to increase the total players back up to over 100 players, especially in the Open Events. The club will also be looking into how to encourage more locals to participate through more encouragement  and development of coaching activities to ensure more juniors are able to play in the event next year. It is vitally important for any juniors receiving any coaching to play in tournament events such as those offered by the Hay Open otherwise their hours and monies spent on coaching are simply wasted. The Hay Open was an ideal opportunity for  all such  players but only 4 juniors from Hay played in the event. The Coach from Griffith , Cheryl Rawle has all her contingent of juniors at the courts at 7.30am before matches started warming up for each day’s play and the results of her efforts are reflected in the results below.

The club on behalf of the players would like to thank the local sponsors of the event that made the staging possible and also would like to thank the committee members Anthony Slattery, Andrew Davies, Warren Hunt, Andrew Schipp, Alan Dwyer, Wendy Heerey, Marg Myers and Steve Longworth for all their time and  assistance making the event a success.

Smallest Hay Open Tennis Tournament in History

50 players have entered for the Hay Tennis Clubs Open tournament this coming weekend. While this represents the smallest entry in the history of the tournament the quality of the Open Singles has not diminished.  In the Mens Singles event which has attracted over 8 entries is headed by Danny Dossetor of Griffith who will be seeded 1 – Danny who has won several Riverina tournaments in the past few years is ranked 54 in Australia.  In the Womens Singles with only 4 entries  Maddison Gregor from Griffith  ranked 238 in Australia will be challenged by Brenda Foster from Wagga who has won the event several times in the past. Brenda is an Australian Representative in International Seniors ITF World championships team tournaments for the over 45 year age group.

Players will be travelling from Albury, Mangoplah, Mildura, Wodonga, Wollongong and Wagga with a large contingent coming from Griffith.

Entries for the event have been extended to try to encourage locals to participate as there are several vacancies in the lower grades especially the C Grade which is ideally suited to Hay players. There are several opportunities for juniors to play in under 14 , under 12 and under 10 events and event the parent child events.  Entries will now close tomorrow night Monday.

The weather forecast for the weekends Tennis is one of the best predicted in recent times with light winds and temperatures in the low 20s. This is compared to last years initial heat and the huge dust storm on the Friday followed by strong cold winds and hail on Saturday and Sunday. There will be some play on Friday evening followed by breakfast at the courts Saturday and Sunday morning with play on both these days starting at 9am and finishing under lights. The finalist will be held from mid morning Sunday with presentations between 3 and 4 pm Sunday.

Thank you to Warren Hunt, Anthony Slattery and Andrew Davies for their preparation of the clay courts as these will be used for some matches. Any assistance in the catering area would be appreciated and Gaylene Booth is in charge– please contact her if you can assist.

For full entry lists  or to check match times and results during the weekend please go to www.92comupting.com.au. Once again the tournament is being managed by President Steve Longworth and his CAT software. Following this event Steve will be managing the Wagga Open over the October long weekend then heading to Turkey to manage the ITF World Super Seniors Individual Championships  in Antalya. The Super Seniors is for those players aged 60 and over in 5 year age groups up to 85 years and over. Of interest in this event is that there are a total of 480 players and there  are 5 entries  in the 85 Mens Singles and the no1 seed in this age group will be Neville Halligan from Queensland who has won the event previously.

Aug 9

We have had a quiet week of tennis with only a handful of very keen members playing in both the mens and womens Roll Up, Tune Up nights.  The weather has been extremely cold but the players tell me they warm up very quickly.

Fifteen juniors participated in coaching on Sunday.  Sundays have been producing the best weather for tennis providing great opportunities for the children to learn the game of tennis in a fun and exciting way.  The children have lots of fun in a friendly and safe environment, encouraging the children to stay healthy and develop skills, while meeting new friends and building social skills.  The MLC Hot Shots program is aimed at children aged 5-12 years, with players as young as 4, and uses modified courts, racquets and balls designed especially for kids designed to let children develop technically and tactically in a fun and exciting atmosphere.  There are also opportunities to play in challenge events for the easy progress to full-court tennis.

Coaching is conducted by an accredited MLC Hot Shots deliverer commencing at 11.00am Sundays and costs $5 per child per session of one hours duration.  Children are encouraged to obtain and complete the registration form from the Tennis Club Administrator, once enrolled for a term each child will receive a free MLC Tennis Hot Shots T-shirt (one T-shirt per participant each year).  Children are able to attend two sessions at a cost of $5 each before having to become a junior member of the Hay Tennis Club for $30 for the 2010/11 financial year.  This gives the children an opportunity to see if they like the game before committing to becoming a financial member of the club which covers Tennis NSW Registration and includes personal injury insurance.

Stay tuned to 2HAYFM weekdays for updates regarding competitions and the weather.

The Club is now calling for nominations for upcoming doubles mens and womens club championships with the competitions to commence in the coming weeks.  Nominations are available on the club website.

Aug 2

It has been a very cold and wet week for tennis.  Nine very enthusiastic ladies and girls competed in the roll up, tune up on Monday night.  The night was bitterly cold, with a slight dew but this didn’t dampen the enthusiasm of the players on the night.  Thank you to those who rolled up to tune up, every night is a learning curve for me with a lot of tuning required on  my part.

Unfortunately the mens Wednesday night tennis was cancelled due to much needed rain.  There was no junior coaching on Sunday.

Ladies and girls Monday night roll up, tune up commencing at 6.30pm, and mens and boys on Wednesday night – weather permitting.  Stay tuned to 2HAYFM for announcements if tennis is cancelled due to poor weather.  Sunday coaching will resume as normal on Sunday at 11.00am.

Mens   - In contrast to the womens night the mens entry is very poor and has been delayed a week to start on the 24th February. This may assist some players who were unavailable for the first few weeks and may now enter..It appears the (A)grade will have 4 players only and they will change partners each week for individual points with play looking to be high and competive There are quite a lot of other (A) grade players who cannot commit themselves every week and have entered as reserves. The (B and C) will be combined and plans are in motion now to reorganise teams so that all will be fairly even and enjoyable. Team details will be placed on the web this week.

Deb Cronin and Jye Thompson Tennis Club Nominations for Sportspersons of Year

Deb Cronin and Jye Thompson will represent the Hay Tennis Club for their 2009 sporting achievements at the Hay Bowling and Golf Clubs annual Sportsperson of the Year contest. Both achieved remarkable success in obtaining best ever records at the Hay Tennis Clubs Annual Club Championships.Deb Cronin the Clubs Senior nomination achieved a "treble" in 2009, meaning she won the three titles in singles, doubles and mixed doubles however it was her second consecutive treble having done it also in 2008.No woman has ever won two trebles in a row in fact only a handful of players have won a treble since the club championships began in 1947.David Davies is the only other player to win consecutive trebles in 1969 &1970.  Debs doubles partners have been Liz Hicks and Andrew Cronin (note- Andrew also scored a treble in 2009). Deb has also won a number of local night team competitions. Jye Thompson is the junior nomination.
