Worst weather conditions did not deter tennis tourney success
The annual open Hay Bowling and Golf Club Tennis Tournament produced its worst weather ever giving it a dust storm, very windy conditions, low temperatures, hail and rain over the three days. Despite all this the tournament created a very pleasant atmosphere played by a100 players which included many locals. The new verandah was put to the test with the weather conditions, proving to be a valuable asset. The presentation of trophies was held at the conclusion of play on the Sunday at 4pm and included the official opening of the verandah project as well as a Honourary Life Members Board.Once again the tournament was run really well from the programing of matches by Steve Longworth to the many voluntry workers who spent their time over the weekend with competitors again satisfied that the hay tourney is best. The major winners were Daniel Dossetor of Griffith and Waggas Brooke Brustolin who beat last years champion Maddison Gregor.Local wins went to Andrew Davies winning the (B) grade singles 9/4 over Aidan Perrin(Tumut), Warren Hunt & Phil Callaghan (B)doubles over Scott Anscombe (Melb)& James Creasy(Mangoplah). In (C)Grade Doubles Geoff Chapman & Andrew Schipp won from Hugh Burnham & Steve Bate and in the womens Gaylene Stephens and Paula Comb went down in the final to Kaitlyn Staines and Chloe Oates.Once again the juniors section included some of the best in the Riverina so it was a credit for the Hay players even to participate.
